French Polishing and Wood Finishing
French polishing — the application of shellac-based polish by hand to create a deep, lustrous finish — is a traditional craft used on antique and fine furniture, musical instruments, architectural joinery and high-end fitted furniture. Surface Repair Specialists carry out French polishing and wood finishing services across the South East.
What We Do
French polishing — traditional shellac application by hand pad. Full polishing, repolishing of worn or damaged surfaces, and colour matching for repairs.
Furniture restoration — chips, scratches, rings and surface damage on French polished and lacquered furniture. Invisible or near-invisible repairs that preserve the original finish.
Antique furniture repair — experience working on period pieces where preserving the original patina is as important as addressing the damage. Reversible materials used where appropriate.
Architectural joinery — doors, window frames, staircases and fitted joinery in period and contemporary properties.
Hardwax oil and lacquer refinishing — on furniture, floors and joinery. Localised refinishing without stripping the whole piece.
Our Approach to Wood Finishing
We assess every piece individually before recommending a course of action. Our priority is always to preserve as much of the original finish as possible — refinishing only what is necessary, not the whole piece.
