Professional bath resurfacing, done well and cared for properly, typically lasts 10–15 years. Some resurfaced baths remain in excellent condition for longer. The lifespan depends on the quality of the original work, the materials used and how the bath is maintained afterwards.
What Affects How Long Resurfacing Lasts?
Quality of preparation
The single most important factor is surface preparation before the coating is applied. The existing surface must be thoroughly cleaned, degreased and abraded to create a mechanical key for the new coating to bond to. Shortcuts in preparation are the most common cause of premature failure.
Materials used
Professional-grade coatings used by experienced technicians are significantly more durable than consumer-grade products. They are designed to withstand the specific conditions of a bathroom — constant moisture, cleaning products, temperature fluctuations and physical contact.
Application method
Sprayed coatings applied by trained technicians produce a more even, durable result than brush or roller applications. The consistency of the coating thickness directly affects durability.
How the bath is used and cleaned
This is largely within your control. See the aftercare section below.
What Can Reduce the Lifespan?
Abrasive cleaners
Cream cleaners, scouring pads and abrasive cloths damage the surface of a resurfaced bath over time. They create fine scratches that dull the finish and can eventually compromise the coating.
Harsh chemicals
Bleach-based cleaners, descalers and acidic or alkaline cleaning products can attack the coating. Even products labelled as bathroom cleaners may contain chemicals that are not suitable for use on a resurfaced surface.
Physical impact
Dropping heavy objects into a resurfaced bath can chip the new coating just as it can chip the original surface. This is repairable, but repeated impacts will shorten the life of the resurfacing.
Suction mats
Suction bath mats create significant stress on the surface when removed, and can pull at the coating over time. Non-suction mats or a purpose-designed bath mat are preferable.
How to Look After a Resurfaced Bath
Following these guidelines will maximise the life of your resurfacing:
- Use only non-abrasive bathroom cleaners — liquid or foam cleaners, not cream or powder
- Clean with a soft cloth or sponge, not a scouring pad
- Rinse and dry the bath after use where practical to reduce limescale build-up
- Avoid bleach, descalers, oven cleaners and acidic products (including vinegar-based cleaners)
- Do not use suction bath mats directly on the resurfaced surface
- Do not leave the repair area in contact with standing water for extended periods in the first 48 hours after resurfacing
What Is Covered by the Guarantee?
A reputable resurfacing company will guarantee their work — typically for 1–3 years against failure due to workmanship. This covers delamination, peeling or lifting of the coating where caused by poor preparation or application.
It does not cover damage caused by physical impact, improper cleaning or normal wear and tear over time.
At Surface Repair Specialists, all our work carries a guarantee. Your technician will confirm the specific terms for your job.
Can a Resurfaced Bath Be Resurfaced Again?
Yes. If a bath has been professionally resurfaced and the coating has reached the end of its life, it can be resurfaced again. The old coating is removed or abraded back, the surface is prepared and a new coating is applied. This can extend the life of a bath almost indefinitely.
