Yes — a chipped granite worktop can be repaired professionally in almost every case. Granite is one of the most repairable worktop materials, and the results, done well, are invisible under normal viewing conditions.
Why Granite Chips
Despite its hardness, granite is brittle. It is formed under extreme pressure and heat, creating a crystalline structure that is highly resistant to scratching but can fracture under sudden impact — particularly at unsupported edges and corners.
The most common causes of granite chipping are:
- A heavy pot or pan dropped onto a corner or edge
- Impact during installation or removal of appliances
- A heavy object striking the surface near the sink cutout — one of the most vulnerable points
The resulting chip exposes the raw, unpolished granite beneath the finished surface. On dark granites, this appears as a lighter patch. On light granites, the contrast can be less obvious but the textural difference is still visible.
How Is a Chipped Granite Worktop Repaired?
1. Cleaning and preparation
The damaged area is thoroughly cleaned and degreased. Any loose fragments are removed or stabilised.
2. Colour matching
The technician assesses the granite — its base colour, the mineral variation (the flecks and veining that give granite its character) and the finish (polished, honed or leathered). A colour-matched resin compound is mixed on-site to replicate the specific stone as closely as possible.
3. Filling
The resin is applied to the void in layers, building up to slightly above the surface level and allowing each layer to cure.
4. Shaping and finishing
Once fully cured, the repair is shaped flush with the surrounding surface and polished to match the original finish. The technician uses progressively finer abrasives to recreate the surface quality.
How Invisible Is the Repair?
On most granites — particularly darker stones or those with strong mineral variation — the repair is effectively invisible under normal viewing conditions. The mineral variation in the stone helps disguise the repair boundary.
On very pale, plain granites (a consistent white or grey without variation), the repair is harder to conceal perfectly. An experienced technician will give you an honest assessment of what is achievable on your specific stone before starting work.
What About Edge Chips?
Edge chips on granite are among the most common repairs we carry out. The exposed edge of a worktop — particularly at corners, near the hob or around the sink cutout — takes significant impact over time.
Edge chips are fully repairable. The resin compound can be built up to recreate the original edge profile, shaped to match the edge treatment (whether polished, bevelled or bullnose) and finished to an invisible standard.
How Much Does Granite Chip Repair Cost?
A single granite chip repair typically costs £100–£250, depending on the size of the chip, the complexity of the stone pattern and the number of repairs being carried out in the same visit.
This compares to £800–£3,000 or more for granite worktop replacement.
Can All Granite Be Repaired?
Almost all granite can be repaired to a high standard. The main variables are:
- Stone pattern — complex, highly varied patterns are easier to disguise than plain uniform stones
- Size of chip — larger chips take longer and cost slightly more
- Location — chips on visible surfaces are prioritised; chips on less visible areas (under appliances, at the back) are less critical
