Polished concrete floors are increasingly popular in both residential and commercial settings — industrial in aesthetic, durable in practice. When polished concrete chips or cracks, professional repair is possible and preferable to section replacement, which is rarely seamless.
Types of Polished Concrete Floor
Ground and polished in-situ concrete — poured concrete slab ground and polished to a smooth finish. Widely used in commercial spaces, galleries and high-end residential properties.
Microcement — a thin cement-based overlay applied over existing floors and walls. Very popular in contemporary bathrooms and kitchens. Repairable when chipped.
Terrazzo — a specific category covered separately in our terrazzo repair guide.
What Can Be Repaired?
Chips — impact chips in polished concrete are filled with colour-matched cementitious compound and polished to blend with the surrounding surface.
Cracks — hairline and wider cracks can be filled and sealed. Very fine hairline cracks are a normal feature of concrete and are generally left unless they are actively growing or a trip hazard.
Surface scratches — depending on depth, surface scratches may be polishable or may require filling.
The Challenge of Polished Concrete Repair
Matching polished concrete is challenging because concrete varies significantly in colour and aggregate composition even within the same pour. An experienced technician working with a range of aggregate materials and pigments can achieve very good results on most polished concrete colours.
