A cracked tile presents different challenges to a chipped tile — the crack line runs across the surface and may be more visible. But professional repair is possible in many cases and significantly cheaper than tile replacement.
When Can a Cracked Tile Be Repaired?
Hairline cracks — very fine surface cracks that have not broken through the full thickness of the tile. These can be filled with colour-matched compound and sealed. On most tiles the repair is very difficult to see.
Wider cracks — cracks that have opened more significantly are also repairable but the crack line may remain faintly visible on close inspection.
Cracks not at risk of further movement — if the crack was caused by a one-off impact and the tile is otherwise sound, repair is likely to hold well.
When Is Replacement Better?
Cracks caused by substrate movement — if the floor or wall behind the tile is moving (settlement, damp, thermal movement), the crack will reappear after repair. The underlying cause must be addressed.
Multiple cracked tiles — where several tiles in an area are cracked, it may indicate a systemic issue rather than a single impact, and more extensive investigation may be warranted.
Cost
A single tile crack repair typically costs £75–£150. This compares to the cost of sourcing a matching tile, removing the cracked tile without damaging surrounding tiles, and re-grouting — which can run to several hundred pounds. Send us photos for a fixed price.
