Surface repair and surface restoration are related services that address different conditions. Here is a clear explanation of the difference.
Surface Repair
Surface repair addresses specific, localised damage — a chip, a crack, a scratch in a defined area. The repair compound is applied to the damaged area, shaped flush and finished to blend with the surrounding surface. The rest of the surface is unchanged.
When to use: when the surface is generally in good condition but has a specific area of damage. A single chip in a bath, a crack in a tile, a scratch on a floor.
Cost: £75–£250 depending on material and damage extent.
Surface Restoration
Surface restoration addresses the overall condition of a surface — where it has become generally worn, yellowed, scratched or tired. The entire surface is treated — cleaned, repaired and recoated or refinished.
When to use: when the surface has general wear, yellowing, multiple chips or an overall tired appearance. Full bath resurfacing, kitchen worktop polishing and refinishing, floor re-oiling or relacquering.
Cost: £250–£500 depending on the surface and extent of work.
How to Decide
If your bath has a single chip but otherwise looks presentable — repair. If your bath is yellowed, scratched and has multiple chips — restoration. If your floor has one scratch but otherwise looks good — repair. If it has scratches across a wide area — restoration or sanding.
