Flood and water damage can affect kitchen and bathroom surfaces in various ways. Here is what can be salvaged and what needs replacement after a water damage event.

Granite and Quartz After Flooding

Granite and quartz are non-porous and unaffected by water per se. However, flood water carries debris that can chip and scratch surfaces. Surface damage from flood debris is repairable normally.

If flood water has got under a worktop and affected the cabinet below, the worktop itself may be fine even if the cabinet needs replacement.

Laminate Worktops After Flooding

Laminate is vulnerable to water damage. Extended contact with water causes the particle board core to swell, the laminate surface to delaminate and the edges to fail. If flood water has reached laminate worktops for more than a few hours, significant damage is likely.

Minor edge swelling may be stabilisable and repairable. Extensive delamination and swelling requires replacement.

Wooden Worktops After Flooding

Solid wood and hardwood worktops absorb water and swell significantly. After thorough drying (which can take weeks), some solid wood worktops recover sufficiently for repair and refinishing. Others sustain permanent damage requiring replacement.
