Scratched stainless steel appliances — fridges, dishwashers, range cookers and washing machines — are a common frustration. Here is an honest assessment of what can and cannot be done.
Brushed Stainless Steel
Most domestic stainless steel appliances have a brushed finish — fine parallel lines running in one direction. Fine scratches that run with the grain direction can be polished out using appropriate stainless steel polishing techniques.
Scratches that run across the grain are more challenging — restoring the consistent grain direction requires working the entire surrounding area.
Fingerprint-Resistant Coatings
Many modern stainless steel appliances have a fingerprint-resistant coating over the brushed steel. This coating can be damaged by abrasive cleaning. Scratches in the coating rather than the underlying steel are more difficult to address.
Deep Scratches and Dents
Deep scratches in stainless steel and dents in appliance panels are generally not invisibly repairable. Improvement is possible but full invisibility is unlikely.
