Worktops removed for appliance installation, kitchen modification or plumbing work frequently sustain chip damage when they are removed and reinstalled. The edges and corners are most vulnerable during handling.
Why Removal Causes Chips
When a fitted worktop is removed, it must be lifted, tilted and manoeuvred out of the kitchen. Granite and quartz worktops are heavy and brittle at edges — even careful removal can result in edge chips.
The reinstallation is equally risky — setting a heavy worktop back onto cabinets, making minor adjustments and securing it all create opportunities for edge damage.
Who Is Responsible?
If the damage occurred during the removal and reinstallation process, the plumber or tradesperson who carried out the work is liable. Document the damage as soon as it is discovered and contact them.
If the work was carried out by a kitchen installer or building company, their public liability insurance should cover the repair cost.
