Granite is the classic premium kitchen worktop material — natural, unique, extremely durable and, when chipped, very repairable. Professional granite chip repair achieves invisible results on most granite types and costs a fraction of the thousands you would spend on replacement.
Why Granite Chips
Granite is extremely hard — 6–7 on the Mohs scale — and very scratch resistant. But granite is also a crystalline rock, and the boundary between mineral crystals is a natural weakness under sharp impact. The front edges and corners of granite worktops are unsupported and sustain daily impact in a busy kitchen.
The most common locations for granite chips:
- Front corners of the worktop
- Front edge along the full length
- Corners of sink and hob cutouts
- The edge where the worktop meets a wall (especially if the wall was plastered after fitting)
Types of Granite and Repairability
Not all granite repairs are equally straightforward. Here is a guide by granite type:
Black granites (Absolute Black, Zimbabwe Black, Angola Black) — the most straightforward to repair. The consistent, uniform colour means a well-mixed black compound is an accurate match. Results on black granite are consistently excellent.
White and light granites (Kashmir White, Bianco Romano, Colonial White) — good results. The light background with mineral speckles is matchable by an experienced technician.
Complex patterned granites (Tan Brown, Baltic Brown, Giallo Ornamental, Multicolour Red) — more challenging due to the varied pattern of colours and mineral crystals. Very good results achievable but more assessment required.
Blue and exotic granites (Volga Blue, Labradorite, Blue Pearl) — specialist colour matching required. We recommend sending photos for assessment before committing to a visit on unusual granite types.
How Much Does Granite Chip Repair Cost?
- Single chip (small — under 10mm): £95–£150
- Single chip (medium — 10–25mm): £125–£200
- Corner chip (large): £150–£250
- Crack from sink or hob cutout: £150–£300
- Multiple chips in one visit: reduced rate for additional items
For comparison, granite worktop replacement costs £2,000–£8,000+ for a typical kitchen, including stone, templating, fabrication and fitting. A chip repair at £95–£200 is a compelling alternative.
The Repair in Practice — What Happens on the Day
The technician arrives, assesses the chip in natural light and begins the colour matching process. For granite, this involves not just matching the overall colour but understanding the mineral composition visible at the chip location — which may contain specific crystals of feldspar, quartz or mica that need to be replicated.
The compound is mixed, tested on a hidden area, adjusted if necessary, then applied to the chip in layers. Once cured, it is shaped flush and polished to match the surrounding granite finish — polished, honed or leathered as appropriate.
The whole process takes 2–3 hours for a single chip.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can the fragment be re-bonded?
Sometimes. If the chip came away in one clean piece and you have kept it, send us a photo. In some cases we can bond the original fragment back rather than filling — this gives the best possible result. Keep any chips in a sealed bag.
Will the repair affect the stone’s value?
A well-executed invisible repair does not affect the value of a property. An unrepaired chip does.
Can granite be repaired more than once?
Yes. Granite is stable and repairs can be carried out at any time. Each repair is independent.
Do I need to seal the granite after repair?
We recommend sealing granite annually as part of general maintenance. After a chip repair we seal the repair area as standard.
