Wooden floors add warmth and character to a home but accumulate damage from daily use — scratches from furniture, chips from dropped objects, dents from high heels, gaps as the floor moves with seasonal humidity changes. Most of this damage is repairable without replacing boards.

Types of Wood Floor Damage and How They Are Repaired

Surface scratches
Light scratches that have not penetrated through the surface finish can often be addressed with a specialist floor polish or light re-coating of the affected area. Deeper scratches that have gone through the lacquer into the wood itself require more attention — the scratched area is cleaned, a colour-matched filler applied if needed, and the finish re-built.
Deep scratches and gouges
Significant gouges in a wood floor are filled with a colour-matched wood filler, allowed to cure, sanded flush with the surrounding floor and re-finished. The quality of the result depends significantly on the skill of the colour matching — wood grain needs to be replicated around the repair for an invisible result.
Chips and impact damage
Similar to gouges, chips are filled and re-finished. Edge chips on boards at doorways are particularly common.
Dents
Dents (compressed wood fibres rather than removed material) can sometimes be raised using steam — moisture causes the compressed fibres to swell back toward their original position. Where this is not sufficient, filling and re-finishing is required.
Gaps between boards
Gaps develop as wood floors dry out in central-heated homes. Fine gaps can be filled with a flexible filler. Wider gaps may require specialist rope filling or board replacement.

Hardwood vs Engineered Wood — Does It Matter?

Both hardwood (solid wood throughout) and engineered wood (a real wood veneer over a plywood base) can be repaired. The key difference is the thickness of the wood layer available for sanding.

Solid hardwood can be sanded and re-finished multiple times over its life. Engineered wood has a thinner veneer — typically 3–6mm — which limits the number of times it can be sanded. For engineered floors, localised repair (rather than full sanding) is usually preferable.

When Is Board Replacement Necessary?

Where damage is too extensive to repair invisibly — a board with severe structural damage or damage across its entire face — replacing the individual board may be the better option. This is more disruptive than repair but less so than full floor replacement.

How Much Does Wood Floor Repair Cost?

  • Single scratch or chip repair: £85–£175
  • Multiple repairs in one visit: £150–£300
  • Full floor sanding and re-finishing: quoted separately
