Dekton, Neolith, Lapitec and other sintered stone worktops are among the hardest and most durable surfaces available for kitchen worktops. They are also among the most challenging to repair when chipped. Here is an honest assessment of what is achievable.

What Is Sintered Stone?

Sintered stone is manufactured by applying extreme heat and pressure to a blend of raw natural materials — silica, glass and porcelain — creating an ultra-compact, non-porous surface. The process produces a material that is:

  • Harder than granite
  • More heat resistant than quartz
  • UV stable (suitable for outdoor use)
  • Non-porous and stain resistant

Popular brands in the UK include Dekton (by Cosentino), Neolith (by TheSize), Lapitec and Inalco.

Why Sintered Stone Is Challenging to Repair

The same properties that make sintered stone so durable — extreme hardness and ultra-compact structure — make it difficult to repair when chipped.

A chip in sintered stone typically occurs as a conchoidal fracture — a cone-shaped piece breaks away cleanly, leaving a bright white exposed area against the surface colour. The chip often looks dramatic even when relatively small.

The challenge for repair is two-fold:

1. The material is too hard to key for traditional adhesion — specialist bonding agents are required
2. The surface designs of many sintered stone products — particularly those replicating marble with fine veining — are extremely difficult to replicate convincingly with filler compounds

What Can Be Achieved?

Plain and concrete-effect sintered stone — repairs are achievable to a standard that is not visible at normal viewing distance. Lighter, plainer designs are the most straightforward.
Heavily veined marble-effect designs — these are the most challenging. The fine veining in products like Dekton Portum, Sirius or Vegeta is printed at depth through the material. Replicating this precisely in a chip repair is very difficult. The goal is a result that is not conspicuous at normal viewing distance, not perfect invisibility.
Very pale, minimal designs — products like Dekton Kira or Arga (very white, minimal variation) are the hardest to repair convincingly. Any filler compound will show some boundary under close inspection.

Our Approach

We assess sintered stone chips on a case-by-case basis and give an honest assessment before starting work. We will tell you what is achievable on your specific surface and what the result is likely to look like.

We never start a repair without the client understanding what to expect.
