A chipped bath is one of the most common surface repair enquiries we receive. Whether the chip is on the rim, the floor of the bath, or the side panel, it can almost always be repaired on-site without removing or replacing the bath.
What Causes Bath Chips?
The most common cause is a dropped item — a shampoo bottle, razor, or heavy object — making contact with the bath surface. Baths are vulnerable along the rim and at the base where items are most likely to land. Taps and fittings can also cause chips if knocked or if something falls against them.
What Types of Bath Can Be Repaired?
Acrylic baths — the most common type in UK homes. Chips and cracks are very repairable. The material is workable and takes colour-matched compounds well.
Enamel baths (cast iron and steel) — enamel is harder and more brittle than acrylic. Chips expose the metal underneath and can start to rust if left untreated. Enamel chip repair is specialised work but achievable to a high standard.
Stone resin baths — increasingly popular in premium bathrooms. Stone resin chips are repairable using specialist compounds that match the dense, matte finish of the material.
Fibreglass baths — older baths are often fibreglass. Repairable, though the surface can be more porous and oxidised, making colour matching more complex.
How Much Does Bath Chip Repair Cost?
Bath chip repair typically costs £85–£175 for a single chip. Full bath resurfacing (where the entire surface is recoated) costs £250–£450. Both options are significantly cheaper than replacing the bath, which typically costs £500–£1,500 including fitting, disposal and any associated tiling or panel work.
