Whether a scratched worktop can be repaired depends on the material and the depth of the scratch. Here is an honest guide for each major worktop type.
Granite Worktops
Granite is very scratch-resistant — surface scratches are rare. If your granite worktop has visible scratches, they are likely from grit trapped under an object dragged across the surface or from abrasive cleaning. Very fine surface scratches can be polished out by a professional. Deeper scratches are more difficult and may require filling.
Quartz Worktops
Quartz is marketed as scratch-resistant but can be scratched by harder materials. Fine surface scratches can sometimes be polished out. Deeper scratches require filling with colour-matched compound.
Corian and Solid Surface
Corian is among the most repairable worktop materials for scratches. The homogeneous material means scratches can be sanded out entirely in most cases. The surface is then repolished to the original finish.
Laminate Worktops
Laminate scratches are generally not polishable — the decorative surface layer is thin. Scratches can be filled with colour-matched compound.
Hardwood Worktops
Surface scratches on hardwood can be sanded and refinished locally without sanding the entire worktop.
