A pan placed on a worktop without a trivet, a hot appliance left in the wrong place, a momentary lapse in the kitchen — heat damage on worktops is one of the most common surface repair jobs we carry out. In the majority of cases, it is fully repairable.

What Happens to Worktops When They Burn?

The effect of heat on a worktop depends on the material:

Laminate — heat causes the surface layer to blister, bubble or discolour. The damage is confined to the surface layer in most cases, making it repairable without affecting the substrate.
Granite and quartz — natural and engineered stone worktops are heat resistant but not heat proof. A very hot pan placed directly on the surface can cause thermal shock, resulting in discolouration, surface crazing or in extreme cases, fracture. Most heat damage on stone is surface-level and repairable.
Corian and solid surface — heat causes localised discolouration and surface melting. Because the colour runs throughout the material, the damaged layer can often be abraded away and refinished. More severe burns are filled and refinished.
Solid wood — heat causes scorching of the wood fibres, creating a dark mark. Light scorching can be sanded out and re-oiled. Deeper burns require filling.

How Is Burn Damage Repaired?

Removal of damaged material — the burned area is carefully removed down to undamaged material.
Substrate repair — if the substrate has been affected, this is addressed before the surface repair.
Filling — a colour-matched filler compound is applied in layers to rebuild the surface to the original level.
Finishing — the repaired area is shaped, sanded and polished to match the surrounding surface.

The result on plain or consistent-pattern materials is typically very good. On complex patterned laminates or heavily veined stone, the repair area may be slightly visible under close inspection, but is not visible at normal viewing distance.

What Cannot Be Repaired?

Very severe heat damage — where the worktop has fractured or where the substrate has been significantly affected — may not be repairable to an invisible standard. In these cases, a section replacement (for solid surface materials) or full worktop replacement may be required.

We always give an honest assessment before starting work.

How Much Does Burn Repair Cost?

Burn repair on a worktop typically costs £100–£200 depending on the extent of the damage and the material. This compares to £500–£2,000 or more for worktop replacement.
