Stainless steel sinks present different repair challenges from composite or ceramic sinks. Here is an honest guide to what can and cannot be achieved.
Surface Scratches on Stainless Steel
Brushed stainless steel — the standard finish for most stainless steel kitchen sinks. Fine surface scratches that run with the grain direction can often be polished out using appropriate stainless steel abrasives applied in the direction of the original brushed finish. Results are generally very good.
Scratches that run across the grain are more challenging — polishing them out requires working the entire surrounding area to create a consistent finish.
Polished stainless steel — less common but used on some premium sinks. Mirror polished stainless can be re-polished to remove fine scratches, but deep scratches are more difficult.
Chips and Dents
Chips in stainless steel expose bare metal and create a rough edge. Unlike ceramic or composite, stainless steel cannot be colour-matched — the metallic surface is unique. Small dents and chips can be improved but not made invisible.
Rust Marks
Rust marks on stainless steel are usually surface contamination rather than true corrosion. A specialist stainless steel cleaner often removes rust marks.
