Composite doors are the most popular external door type in the UK. They are durable, thermally efficient and secure — but they are not indestructible. Chips from impact, scratches from keys or tools, and surface damage from weathering all occur and are repairable without replacing the door.

What Is a Composite Door Made Of?

Composite doors typically have a GRP (glass-reinforced plastic) outer skin over a foam-filled core. The GRP skin is the part that is visible and that sustains most damage. It is formed in a mould to replicate a wood grain or smooth finish and is then painted or stained.

What Composite Door Damage Can Be Repaired?

Chips — the most common type of composite door damage. Usually caused by impact from tools, vehicles, bicycles or other objects. Chips in the GRP skin are filled with colour-matched compound and polished.
Scratches — surface scratches in the paint or GRP layer. Can be colour-matched and polished.
Impact damage — larger areas of damage from significant impact. Repairable in most cases.
Sun fade and discolouration — the surface can be resprayed to restore or change the colour.

Composite Door Colour Matching

The challenge with composite door repair is colour matching. Composite doors come in hundreds of colours, and the paint finish weathers over time. An experienced technician with a good eye for colour can achieve excellent results on most doors.

Cost of Composite Door Repair

A single chip repair typically costs £100–£225. A new composite door costs £800–£2,500 plus fitting. The repair option is almost always more economical.
