Corian and other solid surface worktops (Hi-Macs, Staron, Avonite and similar products) are among the most repairable worktop materials available. The solid composition — colour running all the way through the material — means that chips, scratches and even burns can be repaired to an invisible standard in many cases.
What Makes Corian Different to Repair?
Unlike laminate (which has a thin surface layer over a chipboard substrate) or stone (which is a mineral material requiring resin repair), Corian is a solid homogeneous material. This has significant implications for repairability:
Scratches can be sanded out. Because the colour runs through the entire thickness, surface scratches can be abraded away and re-polished without leaving a colour mismatch. On a matt-finish Corian worktop, minor scratches are essentially self-healing with light abrasion.
Chips can be filled and matched with high precision. Corian is available in a wide range of colours, and the solid colour throughout makes it easier to mix a matching filler compound than with a surface-only coating.
Burns can often be addressed by abrasion. Heat damage on Corian creates a discoloured area at the surface. In many cases, this can be abraded away and refinished without filler, particularly on lighter colours.
What Can Be Repaired on Corian?
- Chips and impact damage on edges, corners and surfaces
- Burns and heat marks (from hot pans)
- Deep scratches that penetrate below the surface
- Staining that has not responded to cleaning
- Cracks (less common but repairable in most cases)
What Are the Limits?
Very deep damage — where a significant volume of material has been lost — may leave a slight contour change that is visible under raking light even after repair. For severe damage, the affected section can sometimes be replaced using the seamless jointing technique used in original Corian installation.
Darker Corian colours are harder to repair invisibly than lighter ones, because the colour-matching tolerances are tighter.
How Much Does Corian Repair Cost?
A single Corian chip or scratch repair typically costs £95–£220. The price depends on the extent of damage and the colour — darker, more complex colours require more skill and take longer.
This compares to £600–£2,500 or more for Corian worktop replacement.
