Marble worktops are among the most beautiful and most high-maintenance kitchen surfaces. They are softer than granite or quartz, more susceptible to etching from acidic substances, and more vulnerable to chipping at edges. But they are also very repairable — and the results of professional marble repair are typically excellent.
Common Marble Worktop Damage
Edge chips — the most common type. Marble’s relative softness compared to granite means edges chip more readily.
Corner chips — particularly where worktops meet at a corner.
Etching — dull marks caused by acidic substances (citrus, vinegar, wine) reacting with the calcium carbonate in marble. Surface etching can often be polished out.
Staining — marble is porous and stains from red wine, oils and other substances if not properly sealed. Stain treatment is separate from chip repair.
