Microcement — a thin cement-based coating applied over existing surfaces — has become increasingly popular in contemporary bathrooms and kitchens, where its seamless, industrial aesthetic complements minimalist design. When microcement chips or cracks, professional repair is possible but requires specialist knowledge of the material.

What Is Microcement?

Microcement is a two-component coating system comprising a polymer-modified cement base coat and a coloured top coat, typically sealed with a protective varnish. It is applied in thin layers (2-3mm total) and can be applied over existing tiles, concrete, plywood and other substrates without removal.

Can Microcement Be Repaired?

Yes, though microcement repair requires specific materials and technique. Unlike solid stone materials, microcement is a coating — the repair must match the surface appearance of the coating, including its colour, texture and sheen level.

Results are generally very good on plain microcement colours (white, grey, concrete, black). Textured or heavily varied finishes are more complex.

Common Microcement Damage

Impact chips — particularly on floors and worktops. Filled with colour-matched microcement compound and resealed.
Cracks — often caused by substrate movement. The underlying cause must be addressed before repair.
Surface scratches — on worktops and floors from everyday use. In some cases polishable; in others requiring localised recoating.
