Quartz is marketed as scratch-resistant — and it is, compared to softer materials. But scratches on quartz worktops do occur, and when they do, the question is whether they can be removed.

Can Quartz Be Scratched?

Yes. Although quartz is very hard (around 7 on the Mohs scale), it can be scratched by materials of similar or greater hardness. Common causes include:

  • Ceramic knives or steel cutting directly on the surface
  • Grit or sand trapped under a chopping board or object dragged across the surface
  • Abrasive cleaning pads
  • Heavy abrasive cleaning products

Can Scratches Be Removed from Quartz?

It depends on the depth of the scratch.

Surface scratches — very fine scratches in the polished surface layer can sometimes be polished out by a professional. The scratched area is worked with progressively finer abrasives until the surface is restored to its original finish.
Deeper scratches — scratches that penetrate more deeply into the quartz cannot be polished out. They can be filled with colour-matched compound, but the repair may be visible on very close inspection.

What to Avoid

Do not use DIY scratch repair kits on quartz — the wrong abrasives or compounds can make scratches worse or create a dull patch that is more visible than the original scratch.
