A crack in a shower tray is alarming — particularly if water has begun to seep through. But in most cases, a cracked shower tray can be repaired professionally without the cost and disruption of replacement.
Why Shower Trays Crack
The most common cause is inadequate support beneath the tray. If a shower tray is not fully bedded on mortar or adjustable feet, it can flex under load — and repeated flexing eventually causes the surface to crack. Impact from dropped items can also cause cracking.
Can a Cracked Shower Tray Be Repaired?
For surface cracks that have not compromised the waterproofing of the tray, professional repair is usually possible and effective. The crack is stabilised, filled and finished to match the surrounding surface.
For cracks where water is actively leaking through, the repair process is more involved — the underlying support issue must be addressed before the surface repair, otherwise the repair will fail. We will assess this honestly when we see the damage.
Repair by Shower Tray Material
Acrylic shower trays — the most common type. Cracks are typically repairable to a very good standard.
Stone resin shower trays — denser and heavier than acrylic. Cracks are repairable though the dense material requires specific compounds.
Ceramic and porcelain trays — repairable but the harder material makes crack filling more visible on very close inspection.
Cost of Shower Tray Crack Repair
Shower tray crack repair typically costs £85–£175. Shower tray replacement, including plumbing disconnection, tile removal and refitting, typically costs £400–£1,200 or more.
