Slate is a natural metamorphic rock used extensively in UK kitchens, hallways and bathrooms. Its distinctive layered structure and varied tonal range give it a unique appearance — but also make it one of the more complex natural stones to repair, as matching the layered surface requires specialist technique.
About Natural Slate
Slate is a fine-grained metamorphic rock that splits naturally along flat planes — its characteristic cleavage. The surface of a slate floor tile has a natural texture created by this cleavage, with slight variations in tone, colour and surface level across the tile.
What Slate Floor Damage Can Be Repaired?
Chips at corners and edges — the most common type. The layered structure of slate means that corner chips often have a distinctive stepped appearance. Filled with colour-matched compound and finished to replicate the natural texture.
Cracks — running across the face of a slate tile, usually following the natural cleavage lines. Filled and sealed.
Surface delamination — where the surface layer of the slate is beginning to separate. Consolidated and sealed in most cases.
Matching Slate Colours
Slate comes in a wide range of colours including grey, black, green, purple, brown and riven multicolour. Matching requires working with mineral pigments to achieve the right tone. Our technicians achieve very good results on most standard slate colours.
