Soapstone is a natural metamorphic rock increasingly used for high-end kitchen worktops. It has a distinctive soft, matte appearance and warm grey-green tones. It is also among the softest stone worktop materials — more susceptible to scratching than granite or quartz, and requiring specialist repair knowledge.
About Soapstone
Soapstone (steatite) is a talc-schist — very high in talc, giving it a smooth, slightly greasy feel and low surface hardness (1-2 on the Mohs scale, compared to 6-7 for granite). This softness means it scratches more easily than harder stones, but minor scratches are often improvable with mineral oil treatment.
What Can Be Repaired?
Chips — filled with colour-matched compound using natural stone techniques. Soapstone’s uniform grey-green colour makes colour matching relatively straightforward.
Deep scratches — filled and colour-matched. Surface scratches on soapstone can sometimes be improved with mineral oil and fine sanding.
Cracks — from impact. Repairable using appropriate stone repair compounds.
Note on Soapstone Patina
Soapstone develops a natural patina over time as oils penetrate the surface. Repair compounds are selected to blend with the aged patina rather than the original stone colour.
