Stone resin baths — sold under brand names including Kaldewei, Bette, Victoria + Albert, Crosswater and BC Designs — are premium bathroom fixtures that are worth repairing professionally rather than replacing. Chips and damage to stone resin are repairable to an excellent standard.
What Is Stone Resin?
Stone resin is a composite material made from crushed stone (typically limestone, marble or granite particles) bound with resin. The result is a dense, heavy material with excellent heat retention — stone resin baths feel warm and retain water temperature well.
Stone resin is available in a matte or semi-matte finish, typically in white, off-white or a range of neutral colours. Most premium stone resin baths are a consistent colour throughout the material, which has significant implications for repairability.
Why Stone Resin Repairs Well
Because the colour runs through the entire thickness of the material (similar to Corian), rather than being a surface coating over a different substrate, repairs can be made with a very high degree of colour accuracy.
There is no risk of the repair showing as a different material from the base (as can happen when repairing a chip in an enamel bath that exposes the metal beneath). The repair compound can be matched precisely to the stone resin colour.
Common Stone Resin Bath Damage
Chips — the most common damage. Stone resin, despite its weight and density, is relatively brittle. A chip from a dropped object typically produces a clean, angular void.
Cracks — less common than chips but repairable. Cracks are stabilised and filled.
Surface scratches — stone resin’s matte surface can scratch. Light scratches may be addressable by abrasion and re-finishing.
Impact damage near fixtures — the area around taps and fittings can be damaged during installation or maintenance work.
Repairing Kaldewei and Bette Baths
Kaldewei and Bette baths are made from enamelled steel rather than stone resin, and require the enamel repair approach described in our enamel bath repair guide. However, both manufacturers produce very high quality products that are worth repairing rather than replacing.
Kaldewei in particular has some of the highest quality enamel available, and damaged Kaldewei baths respond well to professional repair.
How Much Does Stone Resin Bath Repair Cost?
Stone resin chip repair typically costs £95–£200 — slightly more than a standard acrylic repair, reflecting the specialist materials required. The result is typically excellent.
