Moving into a new home invariably reveals surface damage — from the previous occupants, from the conveyancing process, or from the move itself. Addressing this damage promptly makes your new home feel truly yours.
Damage to Check For When Moving In
Kitchen worktops — check all edges and corners for chips, particularly around the sink and hob. Check for burns near the hob.
Bathroom — inspect the bath, shower tray and tiles carefully. Chips and cracks in baths and shower trays are common in properties that have been on the market or empty for a period.
Floors — check hardwood and LVT floors for scratches and chips, particularly in doorways and high-traffic areas.
Doors — check composite external doors for chips, and internal doors for scratches and impact marks.
Kitchen cabinets — check door fronts and drawer fronts for chips, scratches and lifting surfaces.
Damage from the Move Itself
Removal companies are careful but damage does occur. Scratched floors from furniture movement, chipped door frames from awkward corners, and marked walls are all common move-in damage types. Document any damage from the removal as soon as it is noticed.
Timing
Address surface damage early — before you are settled in and have furniture in place. Access is easier and the property feels newer and cleaner when the repairs are done promptly.
