Undermount sinks are fitted from below the worktop, with the worktop surface running continuously to the edge of the sink aperture. This gives a clean, seamless look — but it also means the exposed worktop edge around the cutout is vulnerable to chipping. Why Undermount Sink Cutouts Chip

The edge of a worktop around an undermount sink cutout is unsupported on its inner face. When something lands in the sink — a heavy pan, a dropped bottle — the impact transfers to this edge. Over time, or from a single significant impact, chips occur.

Granite and quartz edges around undermount sinks are particularly vulnerable because the material is brittle at exposed edges. Composite worktops can also chip at this point.

Repairing Undermount Sink Cutout Damage

The repair process is the same as for any worktop edge chip — the void is filled with colour-matched compound, shaped flush and polished to match the surrounding surface. The curved internal edge of an undermount cutout requires more careful shaping than a straight worktop edge, but is well within the capabilities of an experienced technician.
