The actions you take immediately after chipping a surface affect the quality of the eventual repair. Here is exactly what to do.

Immediately After the Chip

1. Keep the fragment if it is still intact

If a piece has broken away cleanly and is still in one piece, keep it. In some cases — particularly on granite and quartz — the fragment can be bonded back into position, giving a better result than filling. Keep it safe in a sealed plastic bag.

2. Do not attempt DIY repair immediately

The temptation to apply a DIY repair kit right away is understandable, but a hasty DIY repair that fails or is executed poorly makes the professional repair harder. Leave the chip as it is until you have organised a professional repair.

3. Protect the area from further damage

If the chip is on a worktop, avoid dropping anything else in the same area. If the chip is on a bath, avoid using harsh cleaning products on or near the chip — they can stain the exposed substrate.

4. On enamel baths — act promptly

An exposed metal substrate on an enamel bath begins to rust quickly in a wet bathroom environment. If you have a cast iron or steel bath chip, it is worth prioritising prompt repair to prevent rust developing.
