uPVC window frames are the most common window type in UK homes — durable, low-maintenance and thermally efficient. But they are not immune to damage. Chips, scratches and discolouration all occur and are repairable without replacing the window unit.
What Damages uPVC Frames?
The most common causes of uPVC damage are building work and renovation — trades working near windows can chip or scratch frames with tools, ladders and materials. Impact from garden equipment, vehicles or vandalism is also common. UV exposure causes yellowing over time, particularly on south-facing windows.
What Can Be Repaired?
Chips — filled with colour-matched compound and polished.
Scratches — surface scratches are polished out or filled depending on depth.
Yellowing — discoloured or yellowed uPVC can be recoloured to white or any other colour using specialist uPVC paint systems.
Colour change — uPVC frames can be resprayed to change colour entirely — from white to anthracite grey, for example. This is a specialist spray painting service rather than a repair but is increasingly popular.
Is uPVC Repair Worth It?
A single window unit replacement costs £400–£1,200. A chip repair costs £85–£175. For minor damage, repair is almost always the right choice. For severely damaged frames, we will advise honestly on whether repair or replacement is more appropriate.
