DIY surface repair kits are widely available for around £15–£40. Professional surface repair costs £75–£250. Is the DIY route worth attempting? Here is an honest answer.

What DIY Repair Kits Can Do

DIY repair kits for baths, tiles and worktops typically include a filler compound, a colour chart or basic colours, a spatula and sandpaper. They are designed for simple chips where the colour match is straightforward and the user has patience and a steady hand.

In the right circumstances — a small chip on a plain white surface, for example — a DIY kit can achieve a serviceable result. Not invisible, but significantly better than the raw chip.

What DIY Kits Cannot Do

Colour matching — the fundamental limitation of DIY kits is the colour range. Professional technicians mix colour compounds from a comprehensive library and can match virtually any colour. DIY kits offer a limited range of pre-mixed colours that rarely match precisely, particularly on off-white, cream, grey or coloured surfaces.
Texture matching — professional repairs match not just colour but surface texture — the gloss level, the reflectance, the grain. DIY kits rarely replicate texture accurately.
Enamel — enamel bath repair requires specialist materials and technique. Standard DIY kits are not suitable for enamel surfaces.
Larger damage — chips larger than about 10mm, and all crack repair, require professional technique to achieve a good result.

The Risk of DIY Repair

A poorly executed DIY repair can make a subsequent professional repair harder. Filler that is proud of the surface, incompatible materials, or staining around the repair area all create additional work.

Our Recommendation

For very small chips on plain white surfaces, a DIY kit is a reasonable option if you are prepared for an imperfect result. For anything else — any coloured surface, any chip larger than 5mm, any crack, any enamel surface — professional repair is the better choice.
