Sandstone is a sedimentary rock popular for flooring in country homes, conservatories and outdoor areas. Its warm, earthy tones and natural variation give it a distinctive character — but its relatively soft, porous nature makes it more vulnerable to chipping and staining than harder stone types.
Why Sandstone Chips More Easily
Sandstone is composed of sand grains bonded together by natural minerals. It is significantly softer than granite, quartzite or slate, and chips more readily at corners and edges. The grain structure also means that chips tend to have a rougher, more irregular profile than chips in denser stones.
What Sandstone Damage Can Be Repaired?
Chips — corner and edge chips are very common on sandstone. Filled with colour-matched cementitious or epoxy compound.
Cracks — hairline and wider cracks can be filled and sealed.
Spalling — where the surface of the sandstone is beginning to flake. Consolidated and sealed in most cases.
Staining — sandstone is porous and stains relatively easily. Stain treatment is a separate service from chip repair.
Matching Sandstone
Sandstone colour varies significantly — from pale cream through to deep rust, gold and brown. Matching requires working with natural pigments and aggregate. Our technicians carry materials suited to the most common UK sandstone types.
Cost
A single sandstone chip repair typically costs £85–£150. Send us photos for a fixed price.
