Porcelain floor tiles — available in formats from small mosaic through to large 1200x600mm slabs — are the most popular floor tile type in new UK residential construction. They are durable and low maintenance but chip under impact and are vulnerable at exposed edges.
Why Porcelain Chips
Porcelain is very hard and dense (harder than ceramic) but brittle under sharp impact. Edge chips at grout lines, corner chips at tile intersections, and surface chips from dropped heavy objects are all common on porcelain floors.
Large Format Porcelain Tiles
Large format tiles (600x600mm and above) are popular in contemporary kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. Their size means a chip is often far from the edge where it could be hidden under skirting or furniture. Professional repair is the most practical solution.
Repairing Porcelain Floor Tiles
Porcelain chip repair uses specialist hard ceramic repair compounds applied in layers, shaped flush and polished to match the surrounding tile surface and gloss level. On plain and near-plain porcelain colours (whites, greys, concretes, blacks), results are consistently very good.
Heavily patterned or wood-effect porcelain is more challenging but achievable results are still significantly better than leaving the damage or attempting tile replacement.
Cost
