Carrara and Calacatta are two of the most popular white marble types used in UK homes — and they have different characteristics that affect the repair process.
Carrara Marble
Carrara marble from the Apuan Alps of Italy is the most widely used white marble in the world. It is predominantly white to blue-grey with fine, feathery grey veining. Its consistent background colour and relatively fine veining make it one of the more straightforward marbles to repair.
The grey veining in Carrara is typically fine and well-distributed — an experienced technician can continue veining through the repair area convincingly.
Calacatta Marble
Calacatta marble is quarried in the same region as Carrara but is rarer and more dramatic in appearance — typically a brighter white background with bold, thick, dramatic grey or gold veining. It is considerably more expensive than Carrara.
The bold veining in Calacatta makes repair more challenging — the thick veins must be continued through the repair area convincingly. On repairs in a prominently veined area, the result may be slightly more visible than a Carrara repair.
Statuario
Statuario is another premium Italian marble — bright white with bold grey veining. Repair characteristics similar to Calacatta.
Our Approach
We assess the specific veining pattern at the repair location and discuss realistic expectations before proceeding. For Calacatta, this pre-assessment is particularly important.
