A crack in a granite worktop is more serious than a chip, but many cracks are repairable professionally. Here is an honest assessment.
Why Granite Cracks
Granite can crack from thermal shock (very hot items placed directly on cold stone), inadequate support under the slab, or significant mechanical impact. Cracks often run from stress concentration points — sink cutout corners, hob cutout edges, and the corners of the slab.
Can a Granite Crack Be Repaired?
Hairline cracks — fine surface cracks that have not penetrated the full thickness. These are filled with colour-matched resin, polished flush and effectively sealed. Results are very good.
Through-cracks — cracks that penetrate the full thickness of the worktop. More serious. The crack must be stabilised (preventing further movement) before filling. If the pieces on either side of the crack are still in position and can be held firmly, repair is possible. If there is movement or displacement, repair is more difficult.
Cracks at sink or hob cutouts — very common. Often repairable to a good standard.
When Replacement Is Necessary
If a crack has caused the slab to separate significantly, or if the structural integrity of the worktop is compromised, replacement may be the only option. We give an honest assessment — send photos first.
Cost
Granite crack repair typically costs £150–£350 depending on the length and nature of the crack. Send photos for a fixed price.
