A burn mark on a kitchen worktop is one of the most frustrating types of damage — usually from a moment of inattention with a hot pan. Here is what can be done.
Can Burn Marks Be Removed?
It depends on the material and the depth of the burn.
Laminate worktops — the melamine surface layer blisters and discolours from heat. This damage is permanent — it cannot be polished or cleaned out. Professional repair fills and colours the damaged area.
Quartz worktops — quartz is heat-resistant but the resin binder can be damaged by sustained heat, causing surface discolouration. Minor heat marks on quartz can sometimes be polished out. More significant thermal damage requires professional repair.
Granite — natural stone is more heat-tolerant than quartz. Burn marks on granite are less common but can occur. Professional assessment required.
Corian and solid surface — Corian is among the most repairable materials. Surface burns can often be sanded out entirely.
Hardwood — scorch marks on wooden worktops can be sanded and refinished locally.
Preventing Burn Marks
Always use a trivet or heat mat for hot items. Never place hot pans directly on any worktop surface — even granite and quartz can be damaged by extreme heat.
