Why Slate Worktops Chip and Flake

Slate’s characteristic layered structure (cleavage planes) means it can split along those planes under impact or thermal stress. The result is often a stepped or layered chip rather than the cleaner chip you see on granite or quartz.

What Can Be Repaired

Edge chips — the most common type. The layered structure of slate means edge chips are somewhat predictable in their shape, which actually helps with repair.
Surface chips — from impact with hard or heavy objects.
Flaking — where the surface layer of the slate is beginning to delaminate along natural cleavage planes. Consolidated with specialist stone consolidant before chip repair.
Scratches — slate has a relatively soft surface. Scratches can be filled or treated depending on depth.
