A burn mark on a kitchen worktop is one of the most common surface repair enquiries we receive. Whether from a hot pan, a curling iron left on the surface, or a wayward hob flame, burn damage is almost always repairable — and the results are typically excellent.
What Causes Worktop Burns?
The most common causes are hot pans or baking trays placed directly onto the worktop, heat escaping from under a pot on a hob, and heated styling appliances (straighteners, curling irons) left on the worktop. Steam from kettles placed too close to the edge can also cause surface damage on some materials.
Burn Repair by Worktop Material
Laminate worktops — laminate is the most vulnerable to heat damage. Burns typically cause blistering, blackening or discolouration of the surface. The damaged area is cut back, the substrate treated if affected, and the void filled with colour-matched compound. Results on plain or consistent-pattern laminates are very good.
Quartz and granite — engineered and natural stone are resistant to heat but not immune. Thermal shock can cause surface crazing or discolouration. Affected areas are treated and polished.
Corian and solid surface — Corian is particularly forgiving as it can be sanded and re-polished. Burn marks are often removable without visible traces.
Wood and hardwood — scorch marks on wooden worktops can be sanded and refinished. Results depend on the depth of the scorch.
